ART GALLERY REDESIGN
The objective of this project was to redesign the visual communication for the exhibition Cognitive Distance: The Bookworks of Timothy C. Ely through a cohesive gallery system. The goal was to translate the complex, layered nature of Ely’s work into a clear visitor experience that could exist across multiple touchpoints. This included the creation of a narrative booklet, environmental signage, and a supporting website. The challenge was developing a system that guided visitors through the exhibition while preserving the contemplative and exploratory nature of the artwork.
I approached this project by designing a unified system that connected physical and digital experiences within the gallery. The narrative booklet introduced visitors to the exhibition through pacing, typography, and imagery that reflected the intricate, mysterious qualities of Ely’s bookworks. Environmental signage extended this language into the space, using scale and hierarchy to guide movement and reinforce the exhibition narrative. The website provided an accessible digital layer, offering additional context and extending the experience beyond the gallery. Across all components, the design focused on structure, rhythm, and restraint, allowing the visual system to support the artwork while shaping a clear and immersive visitor journey.
